Our Guild system
Every student belongs to a Guild. The five Guilds of Aquila, Griffin, Lion, Pegasus and Phoenix encourage a sense of pride and belonging, provide a framework for interschool competition and collaboration. Our young people fulfil roles as Guild Captains, Prefects, Sports Captains and Junior Leaders.
In our secondary phase all students belong to a Guild tutor group appropriate to their age range. In this way, younger students have the support of older students with the aim being the shared responsibility for the welfare of all.
Whilst each Guild has its own personal identity, they all endorse a set of core values that affect student aspiration: a sense of belonging; a sense of accomplishment; opportunities for fun and excitement; a spirit of adventure; curiosity and creativity; confidence to take action and opportunities for leadership and responsibility. Each Guild holds an annual Guild Day where our young people and their families from across the Federation get together to celebrate being part of their Guild. Each Guild also has a nominated charity and members of the Guild participate and organise events throughout the year in support of their chosen cause.

Aquila was the eagle owned by Zeus, which carried Ganymede to the heavens to be Zeus’ cup-bearer.
It is said in the old Greek myths that during the ten-year war between the followers of Zeus and the giant Titans, a magnificent eagle, known to us as Aquila, was ever by the side of Zeus waiting to carry his thunderbolts down to kill the monstrous Titans. It was for his loyalty that the eagle was given a position among the stars as the constellation Aquila.
Guild Motto: ‘Loyalty and strength; fairness and determination’
Guild Anthem: ‘Ride of the Valkyries’ by Richard Wagner.
Head of Guild: Mr Maggs
The Griffin is a mythological beast with the body of a lion and the head and wings of an eagle. As the lion is traditionally considered the king of the beasts and the eagle the king of the birds, the griffin nis thought to be an especially powerful and majestic creature. Griffins are normally known for guarding treasure. Alexander the Great allegedly used the symbol of the griffin to represent his kingdom, the largest empire the world has ever seen.
Guild Motto: ‘Truth, Strength and Pride’
Guild Anthem: ‘The Lion King’
Head of Guild: Mr Bolster
The Lion Guild has been formed to represent the history of the previous educational establishment on this site. The motto of “Truth, Strength and Pride” encourages all Guild members to make the best of their opportunities in the Academy. The Guild was given the honour of opening the Academy with an assembly where Lord Drayson was the guest of honour. It is our intention to be first in everything we do, in the spirit of competition whilst acknowledging the abilities of our opponents.
“The Lion King” tells us about the adventure of life and the need to look after each other in a spirit of family. The guild members have settled in well to their new mixed year groups and the sense of family is growing, as well as a desire to work hard gaining Guild points for effort and participation in lessons.
The Guild have had great success on the playing fields, especially in netball and rugby.
Guild Motto: ‘On wings with courage’
Guild Anthem: Queen – ‘Don’t stop me now’
Head of Guild : Mr Matthews
Pegasus has both mythical and real life attachments, and this coming year will see both of these elements drawn together to foster a strong guild bond between the vertical mentor groups and those across Guilds in the form of competition. The Guild have strong links with the RAF and Rolls Royce – the Pegasus engine is the powerful engine for the legendary Harrier jump jet.
The next year looks to be a continuation of new and exciting times for the students at Yate International Academy and Pegasus look forward to nurturing the courageous learning that all Pegasurians are undertaking.
Guild Motto: ‘To a Valiant Heart All Things are Possible’
Head of Guild: Mrs Birkett
The Guild develop a team spirit very quickly. It is to be hoped that pride in membership of a successful team will boost confidence to be more ambitious in all aspects of life. The Guild would like the members to aim to achieve better levels and grades, strive for 100% attendance and constructive ‘on task ‘ behaviour.
Phoenix Guild is also a guild of many talents. The Phoenix shield was designed by the contributions of several Year 10 students. Their motto was also contributed by Year 10’s. One of the particular strengths of the Guild is rugby. Congratulations need to be extended to all the rugby teams and also appreciation for the inspiration provided by Year 11 coaching. The ‘have a go’ ethos is something the Guild wishes to encourage as well as the fact that the entries were so successful.
During the course of the year all members of the Guild are encouraged to do their best and to take advantage of all opportunities offered in the Academy. The younger members of the Guild also have the support of older ‘siblings’ from Year 11 who are ready to share their experience and wisdom of Academy life with the younger members. Every member is allocated their own ‘family’.
