12 students from Yate International Academy will be travelling to Spurgeon’s Academy, a school situated in the slums in Nairobi, Kenya in July 2014. The students will spend 9 days at the school where they will be teaching the students a variety of subjects and skills. They will also spend recreational time with the children at the school, playing games, socialising with and learning from the Kenyan students.
This is an incredible opportunity for the students of Yate International Academy. Not only will they experience the life, traditions and culture of Kenya, they will also be able to enhance their personal skills. Every member of Team Kenya will be able to offer something to the students at Spurgeon’s Academy and they will no doubt have lots to discover from the students in return.
Team Kenya need to raise £23,000 to fund the trip to Nairobi. They have already started by booking in and organising lots of fundraising ventures to get them going. On February 23rd, Team Kenya raise money with a sponsored 5 mile relay swim within 2 hours, at Yate Leisure Centre. On the weekend of 28th March they raised over £900 packing bags at Morrisons in Yate.
Other fundraising activities planned:
- bag-packing days at Sainsburys Emersons Green
- making and selling cards
- baking cakes
- collecting car boot sale items
- 2014 calendar (sponsored by Sprint Print)
Team Kenya is extremely grateful to have already received local support and sponsorship from Ergochair who have kindly sponsored the team with t-shirts and a banner to help with their fundraising events.
Team Kenya is looking forward to a busy but exciting year ahead as they work towards their £23,000 target. They will also be collecting resources and games which they can take to Nairobi and leave with the students at Spurgeon’s Academy. Keep an eye out for Team Kenya in the coming year and please support them in any way you can to help them reaching their goal
